One of the things I’m constantly telling our writers is to never use exclamation marks in journalism, yet here I am, in a headline, sneaking one in. Hey, we’re all a mess of contradictions, right? Right.
Anyway, you should remember to never use exclamation marks when you write for us (unless you’re using it for humour), which you will probably start doing in September if you don’t already. Because in September, when things are—fingers crossed—back to normal, we’ll be doing our usual September things, pre-pandemic: going into classrooms to talk shop and get some new recruits, handing out copies of our print paper (if we are indeed up and running with our print edition again) and hopefully getting some new recruits along the way, drinking lots of coffee in our office while training new recruits. (We’ll also be launching our new app as well as a more streamlined website).
The great thing is, you can be one of our new writers in September; any Camosun student can be one of our new writers in September. The only thing you NEED to be to write for us is a Camosun student, actually (also, note: never use all caps in journalism, this isn’t the community centre newsletter, for fuck’s sake) (also: swearing is cheap writing and rarely works; again, only use in humour).
See how much you can learn writing for us? Not to mention the ethical dillemas you can navigate (for example, dealing with sources who insist to see your story before it runs, which is against our policies, and the policies of any media outlet worth reading), the real-world experience you get working with a professional editing team and being published, and the satisfaction of just maybe writing a piece that actually creates some change in the Camosun community, which our stories certainly have done over the years. (And, yes, we give you free concert and theatre tickets to go write honest, critical reviews, too, so, hey: free stuff.)
We train you every step of the way, so email us today at editor@nexusnewspaper.com to get started. This is your chance to write for an award-winning media outlet that’s been operating for 31 years, delivering honest journalism with integrity and training students how to write, how to think critically, how to deliver fair stories.
And this fall, you’ll be our next star writer.
