The best kind of music for me is the kind that tells a cohesive story. Just like movies, books, or paintings, music can be used as an effective storytelling tool that can translate its story to its audience in an exciting way and leave an indelible impression that will make the listener fall in love with the music itself.
By using her new EP Wild Whisper as a tool for showcasing her inspiring story about her life as a Jehovah’s Witnesses doomsday cult survivor and the unacceptable racism and other hardships she faced in her life, Toronto-based Anishinaabe/Cree artist jayli Wolf has succeeded in her musical storytelling quest and has made a memorable experimental electronic rock EP that shows every promise of standing the test of time.
An excellent example of this is the song “Child of the Government.” By using the musical stylings of both classical and electronic music, this song brilliantly documents the upbringing of its artist in vivid detail and proves that Wolf—also one half of electro-pop duo Once a Tree—is a musician to pay attention to.
This is an amazingly expressive release from a young artist and is one of the most captivating musical experiences I’ve had for a long time.
