Student groups happy with federal budget
The federal government announced their budget on Monday, April 19, and student groups are voicing their happiness with it. The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations sent out a press release saying they were “pleased with the comprehensive student aid package” announced in the budget; the British Columbia Federation of Students applauded the budget, saying it “has students celebrating.” In the budget, the government announced the suspension of interest accrual on Canada Student Loans and Canada Apprentice Loans until March 2023; the doubling of funding for the Canada Student Grants program until August 2023; a $233-million investment in child care; a $371.8-million investment into the Canada Summer Jobs program; and a $240-million investment into the Student Work Placement program for 2021-22. Along with other investments in research, education, and employment for students, the government pledged a total of $5.7 billion in areas of interest for students.
Camosun student gets $5,000 bursary
Camosun College Medical Radiography student Riley Briscoe recently received a $5,000 bursary from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan). The CICan Paul and Gerri Charette Bursary Award is presented annually to Canadian post-secondary students facing financial challenges in completing their education. Camosun Nursing students make learning simulation
A new online simulation game has been created at Camosun to help Nursing students learn during the pandemic. The footage for the simulation, which is called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Exacerbation, was taken at Camosun, and was made by Camosun staff, faculty, and students. The simulation is available for free for “the global medical education community,” according to a Camosun press release.
PISE CEO to narrate at Olympics
Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence CEO Robert Bettauer will be narrating for CBC’s coverage of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Bettauer will be providing colour commentary for the tennis competition at the Olympics, which are being held from July 23 to August 8. Bettauer, who has broadcast at three other Olympics, is a three-time Canadian singles tennis champion and coached Canada in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
New cycling society launches
Two local cycling groups have merged to form Capital Bike. The new society combines The Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society; see capitalbike.ca for more information.
