Strike, you’re out: In our October 19, 1998, issue, Nexus reported on CUPE local 2081 members picketing outside of both Camosun College campuses due to a lack of wage increases. Students entering school the previous Friday had been met with college services impacted by the strike. This resulted in the library, cafeteria, registration, and childcare facilities being closed, and some classes being cancelled. CUPE 2081 is still the union representing Camosun College support staff today.
No rest for the wicked: In this issue, Nexus writer Deidre R. Burden reported on a number of crimes that were taking place at Camosun. One incident involved a car being stolen out of the student parking lot in broad daylight; it was later found damaged downtown. Additionally, a mountain bike was stolen from behind the Young Building. This is a good reminder from the past to make sure cars and bikes are locked up safely.
Where are the books?: Also in our October 19, 1998 issue, Nexus’ uni-named writer AJ wrote about a shortage of textbooks in the school’s library. Apparently, books were being bought by waitlisted students well before they were accepted into classes. That, paired with students not returning books during the bookstore’s buy-back period, resulted in students being left without textbooks. Wow—life before online textbooks sounds complicated.
