The grilled cheese yummyness: reviewing the Camosun Cuisine Machine

Web Exclusive Campus

Another day, another hungry student. So what to do when there’s a food truck on campus? Right: get the food! The day I went to the Camosun Cuisine Machine they were serving up a grilled cheese sandwich with some fancy soup options to choose from.

Camosun Cuisine Machine is the college’s food truck, operated by Culinary Arts students (to get the latest menu updates and schedules, you can check out their Instagram or Facebook pages).

So, let’s get back to the grilled cheese. The bread was house baked and gluten free (big plus!) and light, yet with a yummy consistency to chew. I chose the white bread option, but they also have brown bread, if you prefer that. I was told that because it’s house baked, white bread is healthy. Well, we all need to justify a yummy decision, right?

The cheese was nicely melted, yet not dropping out of the sandwich and, overall, the taste was as good as a grilled cheese can get. However, I’d love to try it with some other cheeses on there—gorgonzola would be mindblowing. But so far so good: the cheddar was just fine.

The sandwich came accompanied with a soup; I chose Moroccan vegetable. It was hearty, hot, and full of flavour. I ate it all; I should admit that I might have inhaled it because it was really good and just fit with the weather. You also could get two other options—one was a chicken, corn, and jalapeno chowder and the other was a tomato red pepper bisque. I was wearing white, so the bisque was definitely a no-go. The sandwich and soup combo came to an affordable $11 and was a good size: it kept this hungry student full for the whole day.

The Camosun Cuisine Machine staff was super friendly, and I could pay by card, which is also a big plus to me.

But the best thing was they let me bring my own container. I know this usually disrupts the workflow, but it’s so good that they let you do it. I could see that all their packaging was compostable, but also, if more students (and instructors) would bring their own containers, it would have a big impact on our waste management. This is a nice environmental sidenote that only added to my pleasurable experience this time around with the Camosun Cuisine Machine.
