Moving out, moving in, packing things up, and leaving things behind. Sound familiar?
One day you’re living at your parents’ house and you don’t have to worry about adult things and the next day you’re overwhelmed with rent, bills, buying food (again? I thought the food I bought last weekend would last for a month; I’m sure my roommate ate half of it), making your own food, cleaning the apartment, going to work, and, of course, being a student.
To be honest with all of you, I never thought it would be so tiring having to think about making food after getting home from college classes and knowing I still have a thousand things to study. Where is this time that I have to go cook something? So, I often have the tempting thought of ordering from Skip the Dishes. It’s a time-saver, but then I get to the checkout, I see the price, and I drop it.
Adult life sucks but at the same time it’s amazing because we have the freedom to do anything we want. However, we have to remember that everything has consequences. If you forget to pay your rent, well, best-case scenario is you’ll have a really angry message from your landlord the next day. Worst-case scenario is you’re crashing with a friend for a while.
As much as I love my freedom and my space, it’s a lot to deal with. An important thing to remember is to be dedicated enough to manage your time. Plus, we must be responsible to be able to keep up with this life, which only gets busier as we move through adulthood.
Still, now is the perfect moment to find things you love to do and to get to know yourself better. Go to that amazing party and come back at 3, 4, 5 am. Go for that hike that you were thinking about, get together with friends and have pizza night with drinks. Try to do some yoga, meditate, go to the gym, drink a cup of tea while you write something down or go outside to see the stars.
You still need to be responsible, but don’t become so focused on your new life and new responsibilities that you stop trying new things. I caught myself doing that, so I decided to start to relax more. Yes, I know I have to remember to pay my hydro bill tomorrow, but I will try to not let that consume me. You should do the same.
I’ve been learning how to balance everything. For the first time in my life I went on a 4 am hike to see the sunrise. I woke up and I decided to spend a couple of hours just singing and making and eating breakfast.
Adult life carries with it a lot of responsibilities, but learn how to balance everything so you don’t end up hating it.
