Learning from home for 25 years: The story “School on the air” in our September 3, 1996 issue threw me for a loop when I started reading it: “The idea of taking classes from the comfort of your own home has taken shape at Camosun College.” Given the events of the past year and a half, you could see my confusion. This story, however, was about the college’s radio station at the time, CKMO, offering credit courses over the air.
Well, it’s helpful, I suppose: That same story, when mentioning the Young Building, adds that it is “the one with the big clock on the roof,” which is sort of odd language for a newspaper, but, hey, whatever helps new students find their way around campus.
Landline not included: An ad from Shaw Cable promises a “Cable TV student discount” in this issue, with channels such as MuchMusic being part of the package. On the “nostalgia for archaic technologies” scale, this ranks right below seeing an ad for a phone book or a PSA reminding you that you can call the telephone operator to ask them the time.
