Kinda has a ring to it: A letter to the editor in our April 15, 1996 edition took issue with our story about the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) council that ran the month before. The anonymous letter-writer had concerns with our lack of “responsible reporting.” The writer said, correctly, that one of the roles of the student press is to act as a watchdog of the student society, but they said that they felt our recent coverage of the CCSS has leaned toward sensationalism, so suggested that we may consider renaming the paper the Nexus Enquirer.
And, somewhere, Robert smiled: Our story “Student Society AGM close but no cigar” talked about the CCSS having two failed attempts at holding their annual general meeting due to lack of quorum and “apathy and excessive debate.” Most interesting was the positive spin that then-CCSS chair Julie Alatiit put on things: “It was an enlightening experience on the dynamics of Robert’s Rules of Order,” she said, which marked the first and only time anyone has ever said those words.
Let the college hear it: The story “New committee created for grade appeal” detailed how Camosun College was streamlining its academic appeals process by creating an Academic Appeals Committee, with a student representative position. Today, the college continues to seek input from students, with a new Student Voice Survey available for students to have their say; see the college’s Instagram bio for the survey link.
25 Years Ago in Nexus will return in September.
