The name remains the same: The story “CCSS Constitution – Changing the Rules” in our March 4, 1996 issue talked about how the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) almost became known as something else that year. Writer Jody MacFarland reported on how several changes were being proposed at the CCSS’ upcoming AGM, one of which was a motion to change the organization’s name to the Camosun Students Union. The name change didn’t happen and the CCSS continues working for students to this day.
Worm burgers: The cover of this issue promised a story on “worm burgers” inside, but this was 1996, when eating worms was hardly as mainstream as it is today, which is still not all that mainstream, so I figured it wasn’t being literal. But, sure enough, we printed a recipe for worm burgers in this issue, featuring 2 pounds of washed, cleaned and ground earthworms. The final step of the very back-to-basics recipe was “broil over a driftwood fire.”
Now that’s inspiration: The review “Author offers little inspiration” was writer Arienne Morrow’s take on playwright and artist John Gray’s recent talk at Milestone’s restaurant downtown. The review went from bitter, talking about Gray’s two books (“They may even have been good, but since they wouldn’t give me one to read, I can’t tell you about the quality of the wit or the prose.”) to his talk: “Just another Prima Donna with a God complex.” Ouch.
