Keep corporations out of post-secondary: Our October 2, 1995 issue featured a feisty student editorial written by Nick Yaremchuk. In it, Yaremchuk came out strong, saying “Let’s face it, large corporations have a foothold on Camosun College,” and went on to say how upset he was to see a Citibank Visa representative on campus trying to get students to sign up for credit cards. “I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who felt like torching that fancy little display table,” he said, adding that “Next time you cruise through campus watch out for these attempted assaults on your better judgement.”
Shit and piss: The Students for Environmental Awareness column—also written by Nick Yaremchuk—this issue featured the attention-grabbing headline “Don’t flush when you piss!!” and also contained these wise words, which we should continue to heed all these years later: “Don’t kick the shit out of Mother Nature. She’s cool.”
We still don’t want it: We regularly go into classrooms to talk to students about Nexus, and one of the most common questions we field is “Do you run poetry?” Our answer is no, as a newspaper, we don’t run poetry. Apparently, that wasn’t true 25 years ago—in this issue we encouraged readers to submit poems. Whatever, that was then, this is now, don’t use this against us, we aren’t running poetry. (At this point, however, might I point you in the direction of Beside the Point, Camosun’s literary journal?)
