Shortly after an announcement that the federal government had launched the $912-million Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG) program, which provides grants to post-secondary students who volunteer, the contract with the organization that was to be distributing the money has been cancelled.
The Liberals had faced much criticism after they announced WE Charity would be distributing the funds, as well as receiving at least $19.5 million in fees for the contract (Nexus was working on a story on this and had a request in, which had not been answered at press time, to see the contract). WE Charity has ties to the Trudeau family: Sophie Trudeau is a volunteer for WE and hosts a podcast in association with the organization.
Today, an announcement was made that the two organizations had agreed to not work on the program together. Instead, the government will distribute the grants itself.
