The True Story of Bananagun
(Full Time Hobby)
4/5
After dropping a pair of damn good 7” singles in 2019, Melbourne’s Bananagun is ready to release their first full-length record, The True Story of Bananagun.
There is no angst or sadness here, and it’s incredibly refreshing to hear rock ’n’ roll that brings fun and funk in such large doses. Elements of late ’60s Pink Floyd, Small Faces, and Grateful Dead are present throughout, but it’s the fuzzed-out bass and Afrobeat rhythms that bring the sound together. “People Talk Too Much” (a great choice as the lead single) and “The Master” seem destined for airplay.
Like their earlier releases, The True Story of Bananagun is heavily retro, but there is a rhythmic twist that makes Bananagun’s sound original and separates them from the many paint-by-numbers psych-pop groups that have come and gone. The only downside is that one or two of the deeper cuts are competently crafted filler that don’t quite fit into what is otherwise a great debut album.
