Bananagun
Do Yeah
(Full Time Hobby)
3.5/5
Bananagun, a five piece psych rock band out of Melbourne, Australia, are ready to share their music with the rest of the world. Do Yeah, the band’s first 7” single, is set for worldwide release on September 6.
With hints of Donovan and Velvet Underground scattered throughout these three songs, Bananagun’s production takes you back to the psychedelic folk rock recordings of the 1960s. The lead single, “Do Yeah,” is a throwback that catches the ear from the opening measure. The bass-heavy track is carried by an infectious djembe beat that keeps you dancing. The first B-side, “Top Cat,” takes us in a different direction with ’60s Brit-pop vocal melodies and guitar licks.
At times there is too much going on and it feels a little bit forced. But, overall, all three tracks are solid, and, really, there’s nothing else like it coming out these days.
Do Yeah is short, but it’s entertaining from start to finish. Hopefully this is just a sample and we hear an album from Bananagun soon.
