Goodnight Mister Tom a heartstring-pulling success

Web Exclusive

Goodnight Mister Tom is an incredibly moving story of a young World War II evacuee and a seemingly callous elderly man whose forced meeting grows into a heartwarming friendship.

On the evening I went, the magical atmosphere of the night began far before the show, which is held in the timeless Langham Court Theatre. The theatre are celebrating their 90th season, so things quickly bloomed into a lively celebration. As I observed the bustle of seats filling and snacks and drinks being shared, I took in the plethora of showcased local art and memorabilia from the theatre’s long history that was sprinkled around Langham. For newcomers and old-timers alike, a jitter of excitement soon rushed through the homely theatre as the lights lowered and the performance commenced.

From the first line of the show, I was entirely captivated. The fantastic cast, which included a range of ages and expertise, hold a depth and care for their parts that is easily noted. A much-deserved salute should be given to the leads, as their roles are what brought all the vibrant pieces of the show into one graceful play.

With almost no mishaps, the performance flows flawlessly. I was especially captivated by the unbelievably realistic puppetry, something I had never seen done at another play. The puppet animals were made to move as if they were real animals on the stage. It’s a unique aspect to this show that makes it all the more enchanting.

Lost in a magical two hours, the ending came far too soon. Absorbed into the charming life of the characters, I was carried through the twist and turns of the play, as well as the multitude of tear-jerking moments. With lessons of life, friendships, and love, Goodnight Mister Tom pulled on every heartstring I had.

I left with a warm smile on my face and a few tear marks on my cheek. This spotless rendition of Goodnight Mister Tom, performed in this picturesque theatre, had me feeling that I couldn’t have enjoyed my time better. I encourage all those interested in attending to bring your tissues and expect to leave with a lighter heart and a greater love of live performance. I know I did.
