Your warmth should be shared
With a cold snap blanketing Vancouver Island, it’s important to remember those who may not have warm outerwear. Cool Aid is collecting winter garments to donate to those in need, so gather up those gently used items, such as hats, gloves, blankets, and sleeping bags. Donations can be dropped off at 1509 Douglas St. from 9 am to 3 pm until Friday, January 9.

Victoria painters’ quest for fresh perception
Five Victoria artists embark on the quest of re-presenting the world through their paintings to make the viewer question his/her perception of reality. All five of the painters have chosen different inspirations for their work and will be meeting with curators in a panel discussion on Saturday, January 17 at 2 pm. The event opens on January 9 at 7 pm at Open Space, 510 Fort Street. Admission is by donation.

Poetry slam contest offers unique prize
Members of the Greater Victoria community are invited to create a slam-poetry video on the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Winners receive the opportunity to perform their piece at the Provost’s Diversity Research Forum and participate in a workshop with Victoria Slam Champion Missie Peters. There’s no gravity in Sin City
Every season of Sin City has a new setting with unscripted content; the play is improvised in front of the audience, ensuring optimum hilarity. This season’s setting: space. Astronauts set off to replace a crew in space, but when the astronauts arrive at the space station, there is no one to be found… The preview, where the casts debuts its characters, is on January 13 at Victoria Event Centre. Porno to save Dorothy’s home
Dorothy, a woman who can’t afford to live in her manor home any longer, has been given an opportunity to make some cash: a film shot on-site at her home. But little does Dorothy know that the film is actually a porno. People is a drama by Alan Bennett playing at the Langham Court Theatre. Fleetwood Mac blues and country legends at Upstairs
Former members of a little band called Fleetwood Mac are returning to Victoria. Rick Vito and the Lucky Devils, with special guest Billy Burnette, are coming to the Upstairs Cabaret to kick things up a notch; blues style with a country twist. Vito has performed with artists such as Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, and John Mayall. Burnette was born a musician, going on tour at the ripe age of 13 and recording his first album at 18. Doors open at 7:30 pm and tickets are $32 in advance or $35 at the door. Owls are beautiful birds, but they can be difficult to track down… until now! An event at Mill Hill Regional Park in Langford will guide you right to the curious creatures. International guitar wizard night
Some brilliant and influential guitar wizards are coming to the Farquhar Auditorium at UVic’s University Centre on January 18. Brazilian jazz-man Diego Figueiredo, Grammy winner Andrew York, and award-winning Maneli Jamal will combine their talents into one spectacular night of guitar magic at this stop on the International Guitar Night’s 2015 North American Tour. Crafty electronic duo at Distrikt
MSTRKRFT, a Canadian electronic duo hailing from Toronto, is here to perform at Distrikt Nightclub with Kytami, Chino, and Daniele Mereu. This show is sure to include catchy electronic renditions of music from bands similar to Metric and Wolfmother and from poppier artists like Jesse McCartney and Usher. Doors open at 9 pm and tickets are $25.

Sunday fun-day with Jack and the Beanstalk
Turning a Sunday into an extra fun-day will be a cinch with this concert for kids. Jack and the Beanstalk, put on by Dandi Productions and the Victoria Symphony, is a story sure to be loved by all (especially kids) and will be theatrically reenacted at the Royal Theatre. Raising awareness about eating disorders
The Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness campaign is holding a province-wide wristband challenge. Residents of BC are encouraged to order a Love Our Bodies, Love Ourselves wristband free of charge, and post a photo of it to the campaign’s social media.
