When talking to others about Victoria Ska Fest, almost everybody mentioned Shaggy’s slot on the final night. So it shouldn’t have been a surprise that Saturday’s show was packed.
I arrived just in time to catch the last few songs from The Ponderosas, a lively band featuring dance moves led by singers Kristie McCracken and Janette King, vibrant horn players, and solid beats from the rest of the eight-piece ensemble. They brought plenty of energy to the stage with their mixture of soul, R&B, and reggae. Whether they were bringing audience members on stage or teaching them how to dance, they were a fun band to watch.
Next up was Los Rastrillos. A festival favourite, they brought a unique Latin feel to the festival with strong horn and percussion sounds. Another band that got everyone moving and grooving.
By the time Shaggy came on, the crowd was jam-packed in the small, fenced-off area at the inner harbour. And, frankly, I don’t think he lived up to the hype. It takes talent to become so widely known, and he definitely was talented. However, his performance lacked the energy, passion, and enthusiasm many other artists brought to the festival.
It’s cool to be able to say you saw Shaggy, but for the future I’d recommend sticking to Ska Fest’s smaller nights to see some great ska performed by great artists. Overall, though, Victoria Ska Fest is a great local festival that I would go to again.
I wonder what show you attended Gillan? The lack of energy that had woman throwing bra’s on the stage or was it the lack of passion and enthusiasm that had the crowd screaming , SHAGGY , SHAGGY, SHAGGY wanting more..
