The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) has voiced their support towards the striking Camosun College support staff workers, who are again protesting outside Lansdowne and Interurban campuses today.
“The student society is in support of the strike, as we are very supportive of labour unions and the rights that they fight to maintain,” says CCSS external executive Madeline Keller-MacLeod. “The student society hopes that CUPE 2081 members will achieve their goal of attaining a contract that includes the 0-0-2-2-percent wage increase, over four years, that they have asked for.”
Keller-MacLeod says that the CCSS voted to support the strike at their November 19 council meeting, and that they intend to support the strike for as long as it lasts.
“We recognize that the provincial government is currently leaving postsecondary institutions without proper financial support, but proper pay for employees is important,” she says. “Even if this contract were agreed to, CUPE 2081 members would be going four years without a raise.”
In a press release sent out this morning, the college says it will remain open today, with services being very limited or closed. The library is open as a study space only.

The college says it’s anticipated that Camosun will be fully operational tomorrow.
