Sesame Street Live a hit with the knee-high crowd

Arts Web Exclusive July 11, 2012

Actual conversation, more or less, between me and my three-year-old daughter on the way home from Sesame Street Live:

Daughter (in back seat of car): You know, for a kid’s show, it had good pacing, nice choice of songs, and a simple, enjoyable enough plot. There was just enough wink-wink irony to keep the parents awake, and the volume was at an appropriate level. The costumes were fun and colourful and the character interaction with the audience was above and beyond. Definitely a good show for parents to bring little ones to. I very much enjoyed myself as did all the other children there. Thank you for bringing me, father.

Me: Huh? You say something back there?

Daughter: [Uncontrollable tantrum that lasts most of the way home]

Me: So you enjoy yourself?

Daughter: Why do the animals sound like people?

Me: Huh? I don’t know. Because.

Daughter: I liked Bert’s funny suit. There was no belt and the shirt was tucked in.

Me: Ah, yes, that was a disco outfit, that was a rather regrettable…

Daughter: [Uncontrollable tantrum]

Me: What was that about?

Daughter: I’m tired!

Me: That’s because it’s way past your bedtime. The morning show would be a better choice for people with younger kids. Was it worth it to see Big Bird in the flesh?

Daughter: [Passed out, snoring, muttering about not being able to understand Elmo in her sleep.]
