BED Talks raise money for charity

By now, most of us have heard of TED Talks, unless we’ve been living in a remote shack someone in Alaska (sounds relaxing, actually). But how many of us have heard of BED Talks?

An upcoming two-night event in Victoria on “Being. Empowering. Discovering” is promising to “engage community” through a series of talks by Mayor Dean Fortin, Alan Ogden, Shine Kelly, and Matthew Ashdown, among others.

Mayor Dean Fortin will be one of many speakers during the upcoming BED Talks (photo provided).

Organized by Camosun visual arts alumni Ami Muranetz, the BED Talks are a fundraiser for Cops for Cancer and run on the theme of engaging ourselves and our community within an 18-minute time slot for each speaker.

Every speaker is so phenomenal in their respective fields that it’s hard not to be excited about the knowledge each one of them brings to the event,” says Muranetz, also a contestant in the Miss BC 2012 competition.

According to Muranetz, the BED name was chosen due to official TED events having a clause that they can’t be fundraisers, and she hopes the BED name will imply a slightly “sexier” batch of presentations.

Although there are many speakers included in the two-day event, taking place at the Victoria Event Centre (1415 Broad St.) June 15 and Temple (525 Fort St.) June 16, Muranetz has trouble singling out which ones she’s most looking forward to.

“Two empowering femmes I’m honored to include in our speaker lineup are MLA Lana Popham and Bellyfit’s Alice Bracegirdle. Lana will be sharing her ideas for synthesizing local and sustainable groups and actions with parliament, and Alice will be sharing on how Bellyfit International embraces women of every size through fitness by teaching self-respect and love,” she says.
