Due to the bank shooting on Shelbourne Street, Camosun College sent out an email at 2:07 pm saying it is locking down the Lansdowne campus, which is right on the edge of where Saanich Police are advising people to stay inside and lock their doors. Police have two suspects in custody in the shooting, which took place this morning at the Bank of Montreal on Shelbourne and Pear, but a third is believed to be at large.
A potential explosive device is believed to be in the area of the shooting, which led police to evacuate people from nearby businesses and residents.
Saanich Police are currently advising anyone in the area of North Dairy to Cedar Hill X Road and Richmond to Cedar Hill Road to shelter in place. Camosun’s Lansdowne campus borders on Richmond.
Update: In an update on its website shortly before 3 pm, the college clarified that the lockdown is out of “an abundance of caution,” and that classes for the remainder of the day are cancelled, with instructors being asked to end classes by 3:30. Security will be going building to building locking doors. The college also asked students to be mindful of changes to bus routes when leaving as many buses are having to detour.
